Dig the Sand Digger from Kettler by Rolly.
Real ground engaging
high carbon steel frame and bucket takes
it to the sandbox. Ages three to five or six (up to 75 pounds)
can sit on a yellow plastic
adjustable seat at the dual lever
manual controls to dig and load.
The blue frame has three non-steered 5" x 3" wheels set 17" apart
for mobility and stability.
Overall, the length with bucket extended fully is 39".
The seat is about 14" above floor level.
Two red-knobbed levers control completely-
the blue left lever is welded to the upper
arm to lift and lower the whole arm.
The yellow lever on the right is linked to
the elbow joint nearer to the 3¼" wide bucket.
A clever link between the elbow and bucket's pivot (wrist?) moves the
bucket in the same direction as the forearm by the same lever
to control bite and tilt.
A thoughtful design blocks a pinch points from little fingers.
The seat with digger rotate around the seat base
the full 360 degrees and the whole
digger can be rolled with foot to ground action.
A toy like this builds muscle memory as a human quickly begins to will the
bucket movement without thinking about their hands, just like friend Rod's
old backhoe assumes lifelike dexterity.

Ground engaging

the sandbox on a tracked chassis!
Otherwise it is much like the Sand Digger above.
Ages three to six can sit on a yellow plastic
adjustable seat with a "CAT" logo at the dual lever
manual controls to dig and load.
The "construction yellow" frame has two rubberized black
tracks over four idlers 17" wide at the edges.
Two levers control completely- the left lever is welded to the upper
arm to lift and lower it and the right lever is linked to
the elbow and wrist nearer to the 3¼" wide bucket.
Yellow plastic discs at major joints block pinch points from little fingers.
The seat with digger rotates completely around the base and the whole
digger can be rolled on its tracks.
Unlike the wheeled foot to ground versions, the tracks can be driven by the
rider's feet on top of the tracks making for a two to one mechanical advantage and realistic crawler maneuverability.

The four rolling wheels are set to a wide gray plastic base for stability and
manuverability in the sandbox. A link between the mid-arm elbow joint
and the wrist joint at the bucket coordinates motion
to tuck the bucket with the right side elbow control lever.
The left lever picks up the whole yellow plastic arm.
