western nation as expected.
In addition, an unknown name brand was on the individual boxes with only a tiny
sticker with "Distributed by ...", one of our major brands.
The products did not meet our complete charter to fit "DurableToys" as we
strive to offer you, our customers.
The shipping costs went into three digits so obviously this was not a profitable business venture.
We hope that your inside knowledge of our commitment to quality would
give you the confidence to buy from DurableToys.com as well as a like amount
of marketing rather than shipping expense.
Several of our suppliers have made transitions in the past year or two and we acknowledge them with our sincere thanks.
Most recently our friend Levi Schwarz decided to make only farm equipment such as feed carts and manure spreaders.
He transitioned the wood and recycled plastic L&L Wagon line to Brian Hochstetler Welding, also in the IL heartland.
We appreciate Levi's years of good work and we continue to call Brian's
nice work the same - L&L Wagons. We have added the adult-sized L&L
Tuffy trike as a new product from Hochstetler.
Brooklyn Geise of Graham, NC has debuted her first recording titled
"Cookin... with Brooklyn" released on November 8, 2006.
Her appearance with the band Lia and the Wave to a full house
at 3 Thirty 3
in Burlington, NC was well received. Eight year old Brooklyn
sang her song with enthusiasm and appreciation in both directions.
Later she signed many CD shuck inserts
and a local magazine with her story - but she had
to leave early on a school night.
At DurableToys.com we are really in the wagon business quite deeply. A total of all possible models and colors of wagons and matching trailers available amounts to about 300 choices. Here are some fun versions.
Robin from Colorado sends this
picture of her two Border Collies pulling
her children in their Speedway Express Series 630 wagon. The larger dog
"TrulieBraw" is centered in the "dog shaft" that Speedway makes as a fun option
to most wagons.
The other dog is "Coffy".
The dogs are "Gee - Haw" trained so that they can go all over town.
"This wagon has been a great deal of fun."
It gets bigger from there, look at Smokey &
Lauren with the larger Valley Road Speeder 1300 wagon and a horse/dog shaft.
While we are dealing with horses, note picture of pony
Kiaz and her boy's L&L plastic wagon which
she doesn't like- to chew on that is. Kiaz since ran away from home and must
have found another nice family to live with, she never said a word.
Bob from California supplied a picture of his customized
EZ-Express
fiberglass wagon.
It has a white gel coat bed finish but everything else is studded, painted,
shined up and detailed. The color is school bus yellow on the racks, holders
and wheels, with a dark green frame. The racks have decorative carriage
bolts and cap nuts at the joints (they are already glued and stapled).
Actually there are plenty more options and parts such
as wheel covers, cushions, shade tops, plus dog and tractor hitches.
See toyacc.htm for more.
Updates: We had one of these built in the colors of St. Paul's
School (Concord, NH) for hauling team water jugs.
The waterproof fiberglass is perfect for pulling up
close then dumping the icewater on the coach.
Another one-of-a-kind wagon is the
L&L wood wagon painted in
Harley-Davidson orange and black, with chrome baby moon wheel covers.
Sandra acceped delivery in the photo. Update: Congrats, a daughter
to her and husband William.
The wagon is perfect for outdoor
picnics held every few weeks and for use by the race team based at
Burlington's Davis' Harley Davidson dealership.
If we could only get the sound just right!
Speaking of loud, check out the [former] DurableToys.com 4474 lb.
red wagon with a version of
Chevrolet Corvette
LT1 power! This big red wagon is [update: was]
fast, with published estimates of
0-60 in the eights and a top speed of 140 mph (police version).
Update: Measured 0-60 in 7 sec.! (6-17-02 G-Tech
Performace Pro- Time: 6.84sec. Temp: 78° RH: 64% BP: 28.98". Mods:
Intake opening and resonators smoothed, K&N air filter, exhaust
crossover added, internally bypassed mufflers, synthetic lubes. )
Update: No longer usable, it was ruined a piece at a time by a teenage male.
While talking spud power: Picture the [then] 11 year old at the 4th of July [1998]
parade at our local ag park, a 500' route with a thoughtful downslope.
Kids are driving every type of pedal thing out there. Our kid is riding
a 95 lb. Bison pedal car with a 100 lb. six wheel 48" wagon coupled on the back.
At the parade end, all the Mommys helped the kids back up the hill
with their wheel toys- that is 'cept his.
Both of his parents jumped into the towed wagon and he
pulled all quarter ton plus of rolling stock back up the hill- almost to
the top before leg fade locked him down. Sorry no pictures, we don't
want a poster child nomination. Update: The same kid became a Marine Corps Officer Candidate and could pull his Platoon up the hill then pedal through a smokey donut shaped burnout to celebrate.
Fun yet? Actually using this
Berlin Loadmaster
wagon for parcel delivery saves a lot a paperwork
that would otherwise be needed to requisition a vehicle. It was greatly
appreciated in Baghdad where it is used daily. The bright red racks contrast
with an otherwise sand colored locale.
This wagon was a lot more fun before the need for it existed,
actually it started as a two-wheel trailer to match a Valley Road 350 wagon.
It was totally broken down and careful mitre cuts were made to form
triangles above a 2X4 with rounded edge to match.
Click in it to enlarge and note the asyemmetry on all three corners, the
length on the left was the front half of the left side and the right slope
was the front transom of the wagon top. All three visible rackholders were removed. The flag
was given with the appreciation of a grateful nation to Debra McCusker in
memory of her father, a WWII veteran.
Another portion of the wood remains to make a second flag holder.
Take the steel chassis from the same Valley Road tag along trailer,
turquoise bicycle handlebars with pink grips,
one chrome trailer ball with attaching nut;
then melt together with 12 welding rods, paint.
What do you then have? A Legway Trailer Articulator, which unlike
a Segway Human Transporter (TM ah rekkon) uses no fuel or batteries.
Pedestrian "Flintstone" propulsion consumes meat and potatoes to
power the vehicle and up to 2000 lb. of towed trailer load.
Adjust the handlebars the way you like then hook up the
trailer to the ball. Wail on the handlebars or get a friend to help
and double up on the motive power. This device was
commissioned to make a big towable barbecue cooker manueverable into a park
setting where a tow vehicle could not go.
Girl in picture once rode the rest of the bike and her church group
borrows the big grill now made easier to position.
Retiring? A re-tire task was made easier by moving them aboard a
Valley Road 350 Wagon that has been in service since 1991.
The four Goodyear Eagles are 28" in diameter and stack 38" tall as mounted
so they are a perfect fit in a 20x40 nominal size wagon.
What happens when a folding leg waterproof tabletop isn't and a wagon bed
gets a UPS-induced dent? Bolt them together and get a
red wagon tray table
that is dog resistant. This one of a kind Radio Flyer piece
can be bought for $5,000, thats how much we like it.
Here is a wagon coffee table that
does not need a parking brake, if it does move, remind us to change
brands of whiskey.
Hey! That's hitting a little close to home; check out the
table/bar made from a 58" Speedway Express wagon top.
Structure on the left in the enlargable picture is a wine rack made from 16 horseshoes welded toghether.
Another custom creation is the
shortened frame from a Valley Road wagon
with a mounting cradle welded on
to fit under a portable generator. It was so well liked that we
had to make another one right after the first.
Here's a first, a Radio Flyer wagon in which the "Radio" part is not
a total misnomer.
As a member of two orgs which use radio communication,
ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and US Coast Guard AUX, we must have
12 Volt power even during Dook Energy outages.
Update: 12/07 a fifth Amateur Radio operator has just passed his test.
At our office we have marine VHF "Auxiliary Cedarock Radio",
NF05AQ, licensed by the
US Coast Guard. We provide a communications guard for USCG-AUX underway
operations at the local lake and can relay distress calls
via landline telephone. Amateur radio is useful during
weather emergencies especially during no-phone conditions.
The Red Cross then calls
out our mobile 2M two-way radio capability aboard the 4474 lb. red wagon
when they need damage assessment reporting help. [Update: That red wagon is
no longer viable.]
A Radio Flyer #90 wagon perfectly serves as the pot for the radio
power generation leftovers. It holds a 12VDC generator & battery charger
fashioned from a used
lawn mower engine, a used automotive alternator with external regulator
on a nice steel frame by Jim Lee's Welding shop.
The engine can be started only with the output electrically disabled
for warmup as there is no way
to pull the cord fast enough to start it while loaded.
It has field current limiting and adjustable
governed speed to match light or heavy loads. A Ford truck
100 A alternator is connected by belt to a 3½ HP CRAFTSHUMAN
engine.
It puts out an 60+ Amps at several connection points
with 14.0 V on the voltmeter.
It has been totally reliable once debugged.
It also helps when one's past career was is electrical engineering-
an advanced degree and 20 years experience sure helps with a hobby.
Credit goes out to another ham, Doug- KF4VTT
for the idea as his version was first.
The rusted out lawnmower previously used
in a confined area has been replaced by an old fashioned
potato powered push reel mower that is fun to use.
